'No regrets' taking grinder to vending machine

A Central Otago shearer has no regrets breaking open a vending machine with an angle grinder when it took his money but didn't give him a chocolate bar.

Andrew Eade says he was fed up with the machine, which was based at his work in Alexandra, taking his money but not delivering the chocolate in return, so he took matters into his own hands.

"I drove down town to a friend's place, picked up my angle grinder, came back, cut a hole in it, grabbed my chocolate bar and left it wide open for everybody else," he says.

Police didn't accept being "hangry" as an excuse.

The 29-year-old appeared in the Alexandra District Court on Thursday and pleaded guilty to a charge of wilful damage.
