Sparky the Kiwi has perhaps clocked up a few more kilometres than others of his kind.

Kiwis aren't usually fans of crowded situations, instead opting for nightly endeavours away from prying eyes.

However, Sparky is by no means a typical kiwi.

In 2002, Sparky was taken in by the Native Bird Recovery Centre after he lost a leg in a gin trap.

Robert Webb, who works for centre, took the kiwi in and hand-raised him which has made the flightless bird comfortable with human interaction and daylight.

Today, Sparky visited year 1 pupils at Glenbervie School in Ngunguru as part of Save the Kiwi Month.

Ruby Mandeno, 6, was one of the lucky few allowed to meet Sparky. It was the first time she had met a Kiwi, and she says she loved the experience.

"It was fun," she said.

Six-year-old Mason Lash was also on the same page, he had one word to describe Sparky – "Awesome".

Sparky is the only kiwi in New Zealand which visits schools.
