If you're a construction worker in New Zealand, you're in high demand, but don't expect a pay rise.

Recruitment specialists Hays says skilled trades, labour, site managers and quantity surveyors are in such short supply that employers are moving quickly to grab their preferred candidate.

But spokesman Jason Walker says that doesn't necessary bring a fatter pay cheque.

"There isn't one construction firm out there that is really pushing up salaries because it is competitive and there is only so much in the pot they can distribute out to their members of staff, because if they don't you have a few issues on site, and you start losing money on these major projects."

But Mr Walker says construction workers are spoilt for choice, with a good tradie often receiving multiple job offers.
