Five New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) firefighters, deployed to help fight Tasmanian wildfires, took a well-deserved moment with their Australian counterparts after a day's work battling fires at Wuthering Heights.

The Wuthering Heights fire has burnt nearly 20,000 hectares of forest.

"Although this fire is largely under control, the weather forecast for the next few days could mean that some of the fires could flare up again," says Acting Commander of Joint Forces New Zealand Kevin McEvoy.

The team will work on the perimeter of the fire, locating hotspots and digging them up using hand tools, and extinguishing them by calling in helicopters if needed, he says.

The crew are staying in Arthur River on the west coast, and are being flown by helicopter to locations each morning.

They will be helping fire crews across Tasmania until February 18.
