Five soldiers from the New Zealand Army have been charged with using drugs while carrying out aid work in aftermath of Cyclone Winston in Fiji.

The New Zealand Defence Force says the charges relate to alleged drug offending while serving with the HMNZS Canterbury, and a trial date is being arranged.

A sailor is still being investigated in relation to the incident.

Around 460 NZDF personnel helped respond to the devastating cyclone in February which killed at least 44 people.

The New Zealand contingent focused its relief efforts on the outlying island of Vanua Levu.
