Speedway king Ivan Mauger's legacy has been purchased by the Canterbury Museum to ensure it remains in his home town for future generations.

With a $1.7 million price tag, it's the museum's largest-ever purchase and includes the gold-plated bike he rode when he broke the world long track speed record in 1986.

Mauger was regarded as the world's greatest ever speedway riders, winning more than 1000 international events.
