The country's premiere orchestra could be in line for major international recognition should it be successful in its bid to win an accolade at the Grammy Awards.

The New Zealand Symphony Orchestra (NZSO) has received a nomination for Best Orchestral Performance at this year's 58th Annual Grammy Awards, and will be up against four other US-based orchestras for top honours.

The NZSO was nominated for its recording of the symphony 'Humen 1839', as well as other works from Chinese Pulitzer-prize winning composer Zhou Long -- something NZSO chief executive Christopher Blake says he's proud of.

"The recording is exciting and colourful and provides many opportunities for the orchestra to display its affinity with contemporary music from the Asia-Pacific region," says Christopher Blake, NZSO chief executive.

"This is one of many international collaborations and projects the NZSO has been involved in over the past few years.

"I'm proud that our players have been acknowledged for their artistic excellence and we look forward to the announcement of the winner."

Should it win its category, the NZSO would join the likes of Lorde, Dame Kiri Te Kanawa and Flight of the Conchords as one of just a handful of Kiwi Grammy Award winners.
