The Government says all trawl vessels working in Snapper 1, the country's most popular fishery, have been fitted with CCTV cameras which will be monitored by independent observers.

Another 40 commercial longline and Danish seiner vessels have been equipped with VMS tracking technology. But still don't have cameras.

Minister for Primary Industries, Nathan Guy, says it means better transparency in the commercial sector, and eventually he wants all commercial vessels to have CCTV.

In recent years, the commercial sector has been accused of significant waste, especially of juvenile fish. Nathan Guy says the CCTV technology will gradually replace observers.
