Fire crews are still at the site of a blaze that saw a woman transferred to Timaru Hospital with serious injuries.

The Fire Service was alerted to a property that went up in flames on Church St, in the heart of the town, at about 5:50am on Sunday.

The burning building was a sleepout, which was partially attached to the main house.

The fire caused significant damage, according to fire services.

Southern Communications shift commander Andrew Norris said the person was asleep when the fire struck, but was awoken by their smoke alarms.

The woman then sustained the burns that left them needing medical treatment as they were fleeing the property.

Another person, who was in the house when the blaze started, was left uninjured.

Investigations into what caused the fire are still ongoing.
