One huff all it takes to kill - coroner

The National Poisons Centre is backing a coroner's call for a multi-agency approach to reduce deaths from huffing gas.

Wallace Bain has released his findings into the death of a 16-year-old Rotorua boy, warning that one huff is all it takes.

He's forwarding the findings to the Ministers of Youth Affairs, Social Development and Health for them to take the appropriate co-ordinated action.

Toxicologist Leo Schep says he's 100 percent behind it.

"If a co-ordinated approach can be achieved, that'd be great because it's not through one avenue that you're going to see success in this area.

"One of the important areas is education, but it's not just education, and if a Government agency can co-ordinate that through the different approaches, we would applaud that."

More than 60 people have died from huffing in New Zealand since 2000.
