One person has received medical attention after a chemical leak at a telecommunications exchange in Wellington.

Emergency services were called to a multi-storey building on the corner of Alpha St and Cambridge Terrace where a 20 kg bottle of refrigerant had leaked and injured the worker.

They were treated by ambulance staff at the scene.

The fire service says the incident occurred on level 4 of the building and around 80 people had to be evacuated.

The building’s chemical alarm system alerted the fire service who arrived and entered the building in orange decontamination suits. The building is being ventilated.

Eight fire trucks are at the scene.
