A man has been charged with careless driving after his passenger fell from a quadbike he was riding and died while he was allegedly intoxicated.

The 23-year-old will appear at the Alexandra District Court on December 6 over the incident, which took place in the early hours of Sunday, September 11.

The incident occurred on Wishart Cres in the Central Otago suburb of Cromwell.

Twenty-year-old Andrew Paul Grubb was the passenger who fell. He was a talented rugby player who represented both Otago Country and Cromwell Rugby Club's premier team.

He was placed on life support immediately after the incident, but tragically passed away in Dunedin Hospital on September 16, five days after he fell from the vehicle.
