It's got its own pool, is surrounded by plants and trees and gets a lot of sun – and it's now the home of Wellington's newest bachelors.

The five brothers from an otter mother – Bay, Eko, Si, Bhutan and Jambi – have just arrived at the city's zoo from Perth Zoo.

The two-year-old Asian small-clawed otters landed on Tuesday and spent the day in quarantine, undergoing health checks by Ministry for Primary Industries staff.

While in their enclosure, they will also be under quarantine for a month as per MPI regulations.

They're still getting used to their new surroundings after their otter-sea from Western Australia, and have spent the past few days exploring their new space.

The mammals, the world's smallest otter species, are classified as vulnerable with habitat loss their biggest threat.

The otters won't be bred, but will play more of an advocacy role for their species.

They typically live in the mangroves and freshwater wetlands of countries including Bangladesh, Burma, India, southern China, Malaysia and Thailand.
