Two people have been arrested after they drove a stolen car onto the middle of an Auckland railway track while trying to flee police.

Police were alerted to the pair at midday after they were seen smashing a car's windows in New Lynn.

They fled from the police, driving up Glenview Rd onto the railway tracks near Glen Eden Station, where they left the car.

The track was closed in both directions from New Lynn to Henderson as the car was cleared, but it has since reopened. Auckland Transport has warned of delays as services return to normal.

The car has now been cleared from the tracks.
