Aviation Security is investigating claims pepper spray was discharged in the international departures area at Auckland Airport on Sunday afternoon, affecting passengers and staff.
A spokesperson says officers don't carry pepper spray so it's likely to have involved the substance being confiscated from a passenger.
Pepper spray is one of the most confiscated items at New Zealand airports.
