Controversial Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, known for his strong stance against drug dealers, has made a pit-stop in Auckland.

The leader has just been at the APEC summit in Peru where he met with other world leaders, and will spend the day in Auckland before flying to the Philippines on Wednesday.

He is staying at the Langham Hotel which has a Philippines flag raised alongside the New Zealand one.

The Prime Minister's office says he has no official engagements with the New Zealand Government.

Mr Duterte is known for his hardline approach of supporting the execution of drug dealers and criminals, with the crackdown claiming thousands of lives.

The policy has earned him a number of nicknames including 'The Punisher' and 'Iron Fist'.
