Pike River figures honoured

Three pillars of the Pike River community have been honoured at Government House for their services to the community.

Bernie Monk, Carol Rose and Colin Smith were among 22 people recognised at today's investiture ceremony, ending a week's worth of honours.

As announced in the latest New Year's Honours list, the pair were both awarded the New Zealand Order of Merit (MNZM).

In the wake of the Pike River disaster, Mr Monk acted as the spokesperson for the families of the 29 men who died.

Following the ceremony this morning, Mr Monk said receiving the commendation was about family.

"I'm honouring my son today. It's very close to my heart and quite emotional."

Mr Monk in January said he was humbled by the recognition, but he felt "hollow" and felt somewhat unworthy because he hadn't achieved everything he wanted, including getting the bodies out.

Ms Rose, who also lost a son in the explosion, is the secretary of the families' group committee and was honoured for her work for justice and reform.
