Police assault accused remanded

The man who assaulted two police officers and allegedly choked one of their dogs following a pursuit near Hamilton last week has appeared in court.

Alex Tereora, 31, faces eight charges including three of aggravated assault and one of attempting to kill a police dog.

He was caught following a pursuit that involved speeds of up to 180kmph, which only ended when he drove over road spikes and slammed into a line of trees.

Tereora, who featured on Police Ten 7 on the night of his arrest, was already wanted in connection with the armed robbery of Asian tourists in Auckland last month.

Police fired a warning shot before Tereora was apprehended however he had already assaulted two officers and was in the process of choking one of their dogs when he was subdued.

Tereora was remanded in custody without plea and will reappear in court next month.
