The search operation launched after a mentally impaired Upper Hutt resident went missing earlier in the week has been suspended.

Police said in a statement that they have called off the search for 62-year-old Mary Berrington after failing to locate her during an "extensive" operation by volunteers, search and rescue teams, and police.

"A large number of people have worked tirelessly over the last four days to try and find Mary and bring her home to her family," said Detective David Mason.

"An exhaustive search effort has been carried out and we have now completed searches of all reasonably possible areas where Mary could be."

Detective Mason said he told Ms Berrington's family the news on Sunday afternoon.

"While they are understandably hugely disappointed that Mary has not yet been found, they are immensely grateful for the efforts of the search teams and the support provided by the wider Upper Hutt community."

And despite the suspension of the search, Detective Mason insists they have not stopped in their efforts to locate her.

"Police will continue with a missing person investigation and we are still keen to hear from anyone who may have seen Mary, or who thinks they may have information that would help us establish what has happened to her," he said.

People with any information on Ms Berrington's whereabouts are advised to call Upper Hutt Police on (04) 527 2300.
