The decomposing body found at the Orakei Domain in Auckland over the weekend has now been identified as 36-year-old Socksay Chansy.

A member of the public discovered his corpse in a dense patch of bush at about 10:30am on Saturday.

The body was so decomposed that police could not immediately ascertain gender or identity, but further examination has identified it as Mr Chansy.

Police say further tests will need to be carried out to work out the cause of death, but they say they're treating it as "unexplained".

"The inquiry is focusing on the Orakei and Mission Bay area, with a view to identifying people who have been sleeping in the reserves and may have seen or come into contact with Mr Chansy," says Detective Senior Sergeant Newman.

Mr Chansy was last seen in the Auckland suburb of Grafton on April 25, and police are interested in hearing of any other sightings.

Police say they wanted to talk to those who knew Mr Chansy and can "shed some light on his movements over these past few months".

Mr Chansy had only recently arrived back in the country after living overseas for a long period, and Snr Sgt Newman says he had living away from his family.

"Mr Chansy was estranged from his family and we believe he had been living and sleeping rough in the central Auckland area in the days or weeks following his last confirmed sighting on April 25," he says.

"We're hoping that by releasing his photo someone will recognise him and may be able to let us know if they had seen him in Auckland since April 25."

Anyone with information about Mr Chansy is urged to contact Glen Innes Police on (09) 524 1936, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
