Kazza, a Central District Police puppy, has passed away from a battle with a mysterious illness.

He was the nephew of police dog Gazza who was shot and killed in April this year during a routine police operation at a Porirua property.

The German Shepherd puppy became unwell and was admitted to Massey University's intensive care unit in Palmerston North.

He underwent therapy and treatments but his condition deteriorated.

"Tragically he lost his battle," a Facebook post says.

"The cause of his ill health is currently unknown and we are awaiting post mortem results."
