A policeman involved in the seven-hour manhunt following the Ashburton Work and Income shooting has described how he dragged the suspected gunman from a hedge he was hiding in.

Giving evidence at the trial of Russell Tully, Constable Reuben Whalley told the court his police dog located someone in the hedge, but the person refused to come out.

"We couldn't see the offender, we couldn't see if the offender had anything in his hands, I then reached down, grabbed the offender's boot and then dragged him out of the hedge," he says.

The alleged gunman wrangled with the police dog before being arrested.

Tully is charged with the murder of two WINZ employees, two attempted murders and setting a man-trap in September 2014.

He was not in court again today, after being kicked out twice for being disruptive on previous days.
