A man who raped a 65-year-old Porirua woman over several hours has pleaded guilty to a raft of charges.

Forty-year-old Peter Niko approached the woman's Waitangirua home last month claiming to be looking for his daughter, before attacking her.

The Johnsonville resident was arrested last month and charged with rape, abduction, aggravated wounding, threatening to kill, burglary and three sexual violation offences.

The attack on the woman in her Waihemo St home left neighbours fearful for their safety.

Porirua police thanked the community for their help, with Inspector Paul Basham saying the victim was being supported by her family and was "incredibly brave".

They've sought to reassure the community that such attacks are rare, though the public should take a "common sense" approach to their security.
