The death of a 33-year-old father of four at Port Nelson has devastated his tight-knit group of workmates.

The Nelson man fell through an open hold from the deck on the MJ Souza - a vessel operated by Talleys Group - where he was working.

Police, colleagues and paramedics tried for 40 minutes to resuscitate him, but he died at the scene.

The man had worked for the company for about four years - and he was a "respected employee".
