A Queenstown postie has been charged with the theft of thousands of items of mail over two years.

The woman, 32, a contractor for New Zealand Post, was arrested on Friday and appeared before a registrar in Queenstown District Court today, where she was remanded to reappear next week.

She faces one charge of theft by a person in a special relationship and further charges may follow.

Detective Grant Miller said police had received four complaints about missing mail, while NZ Post had received about 100.

When police went to her house they found parcels and at least 30 boxes containing between 10 and 100 letters each and five mail bags.

Det Miller estimated there could be between 3000 and 5000 pieces of mail. The mail had been destined for people in the suburb of Fernhill.

The mail was being sorted and police were hoping to release it as soon as possible to NZ Post so it could be delivered.

There could be a slight delay as the mountains of mail are evidence for the court case.
