A man who abducted and indecently assaulted a Palmerston North schoolgirl may be given a life sentence.

Brendan Henson was due to be sentenced this morning but his case was adjourned until July, with Judge Gerard Lynch indicating preventive detention may be considered.

A summary of facts around the case cannot be reported.

However, it can be reported Henson indecently assaulted the child on February 10 and abducted and assaulted her two days later.

Preventive detention is an indeterminate prison sentence and such prisoners released on parole are still managed by Corrections for the rest of their lives.

They can also be recalled to prison at any stage.
