Police are hunting down the culprits who pointed a powerful green laser into the cockpit of a plane flying over the lower North Island on Thursday night.

The commercial flight was flying from Hamilton to Wellington with passengers onboard and both pilots suffered headaches and vision impairment during the incident.

Police say the laser was pointed at the plane from the Trentham area, south of Upper Hutt, near the motorway, at around 8:10pm.

The aircraft was cruising at around 10,500 feet (3200m) at the time.

Although the plane landed safely, police are patrolling the area in search of offenders and are asking for anyone with information to come forward.

Anyone found to be pointing lasers into cockpits can expect to be held to account through the court system and face serious charges, police say.
