Pressure on Govt for Auckland rail link

Opposition parties are putting the pressure on for the Government to commit funds to Auckland's city rail link.

The Green Party is launching a campaign this afternoon for the $2.4-billion price tag to get the central Government help.

It says the city can't function without it and the Government should stump up at least 60 percent of the upgrade.

The proposed 3.5-kilometre track would run from Britomart to Eden Terrace, easing congestion in the busiest parts of the city.

The Greens promise trains would run every 10 minutes, eliminating the need for a timetable. They say if only 10 percent of commuters switch to the train, motorways would free up.

Their Reconnect Auckland campaign aims to get tens of thousands of city dwellers to put pressure on the Government to prioritise the railing over Roads of National Significance around the country.

Transport spokesperson Julie Anne Genter says the business case is overwhelming, as it will create jobs, increase productivity and ease the jammed roads.

Labour's supporting the campaign, saying if they get into power they'll fund half the rail link.
