Kiwis keen for a slice of royalty can now enjoy the next best thing: A piece of Prince Charles’ birthday cake.
Wellington resident Sally Jamison is selling a piece of the prince's 64th birthday cake on TradeMe, after her son-in-law attended his birthday bash at Government House yesterday.
The online auction is due to close tonight, and already has a price tag of more than $100.
“We just thought we’d have a laugh, we never ever in a million years thought that it was going to turn into this,” she told 3 News.
Ms Jamison had hoped to attend the birthday party herself, as her partner was born just five minutes before the prince. But her son-in-law, also born on November 15, beat her to the punch.
She didn’t entirely miss out though, thanks to a generous gift from her son-in-law, who had saved a slice.
For a little fun, Ms Jamison listed the piece on TradeMe and says she couldn’t believe the response.
“To be honest we never expected this much attention,” she says, “it was at $53 this morning and I was just amazed by that.”
The listing has since been viewed more than 10,000 times.
Ms Jamison says she intends to “do something really useful” with the auction’s winnings.
“My partner works in treaty education, so we thought that it might be a good idea to put the money into that, given the relationship between Maori and the Crown,” she says.
However, with more than $100 pledged already, Ms Jamison has no idea what to expect for the auction closing tonight.
“We’re just having the best time,” she says.
“We’ve invited family and friends around for the auction closing at 8pm, so we’re going to be sitting there having a glass of bubbles and watching with great humour.”
Of course, the desire for even a small nibble with the bubbles would have to be ignored – the slice comes in a golden-coloured box, complete with royal seal.
