Private funerals for two victims of the West Auckland tornadoes will be held today.

Three people were killed when a series of tornadoes ripped through Hobsonville and Whenuapai last Thursday, destroying 22 properties and damaging another 200.

Funerals for Massey resident Brendon Johnson, 22 and Tuakau resident Keith Langford, 60, will be held for friends and family, with media asked to stay away.

Funeral arrangements for the third victim, Massey resident Tom Stowers, 42, are still being organised while family arrive from Samoa.

The trio were working at a construction site in Hobsonville when the tornadoes hit. Two were killed instantly when a slab of concrete fell on them. The other person was fatally struck by debris from the storm.

The tornado is New Zealand’s deadliest since 1948, when three people were killed and 80 injured in Hamilton.

It is estimated the total cost of damage from the Auckland tornadoes is between $11 million and $13 million.
