A group in Christchurch is hoping to turn the city's residential red zone into edible gardens.
A public meeting was held today on the proposal, which would use the deserted land to grow fruit and vegetables for the region.
"A lot of the residential red zone is actually class one horticultural soil, which is very precious now; we're losing a lot of our really good soil to residential development," says Edible Canterbury co-ordinator Matt Morris. "So it makes sense."
Small community groups, the Canterbury District Health Board and the city council plan to put a submission to CERA once a complete plan is in place.
