An overnight pursuit has ended with two people being taken to hospital, after the fleeing vehicle collided with a people-mover in south Auckland.

The pursuit started in central Auckland but was abandoned shortly after when things got too dangerous, police say.

Another police patrol unit saw the vehicle driving on Mt Wellington Highway not long after and reengaged the pursuit for a short time before also abandoning.

Senior Sergeant John Newbury says while the second pursuit was occurring, the Eagle helicopter was dispatched which located the vehicle once again on Great South Rd.

He says it then followed the vehicle as it drove through Mangere at speed, where the vehicle came to a halt when it collided with a people-mover head-on.

"Eventually the inevitable did happen and it collided head-on with a people-mover on Massey Rd," Sen Sgt Newbury says.

The driver of the people-mover and a passenger of the fleeing vehicle sustained injuries, and were transported to hospital.

Their injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.
