New drone footage released by Christchurch City Council shows the huge job ahead for contractors tasked with reopening Sumner Rd.

A key connection between Lyttelton and Sumner, the road has been closed since the February 2011 earthquake. There was a high risk of further rock falls and landslides, prompting the immediate closure.

The footage shows huge boulders blocking the road, as well as extensive overgrowth.

The council has been working closely with the New Zealand Transport Agency to try reopen Sumner Rd, recognising its importance as a connection between Lyttelton and Christchurch city.

It is now hoped that the road will be reopened by 2018, after geotechnical risk mitigation began last month.

A previous drone-shot video of the road was released in mid-2015.
