Quake shakes upper South Island

The upper South Island was rocked by a magnitude 5.7 earthquake today, based in St Arnaud near Nelson Lakes National Park.

GeoNet rated the quake as 'strong' and says it was located 35km south-east of St Arnaud and 48km deep.

A Bed and Breakfast owner in the area said he definitely felt the shake but there was no damage.

His light fittings in his home were swaying he says.

The owner of Alpine Lodge in St Arnaud, Alexandra Unterberger, says everybody felt it but there doesn’t seem to be any damage.

"It started off just a little shake and then got bigger," she says.

"We just had some guests at reception asking about accommodation. They’re from overseas and hadn’t felt an earthquake before. They were quite jovial about it."
