Queenstown freedom campers lash out at cameraman

Tourists in Queenstown are camping out in a vacant section which has horrified neighbours.

However, the council is powerless to do anything as the section is on private property.

The section is near the Queenstown Gardens and roughly 30 cars are parked there each night.

Tourists are attracted to the spot because it's free and there is a public toilet in the park nearby. They say accommodation in Queenstown is expensive.

A representative for the property owner told Newshub the private property signs have been taken down and a fence damaged. The owner is planning on resurrecting more signs and wants the campers off the section.

A Newshub cameraman who went to film the campers got a bit more than he bargained for this morning after one tourist pushed his camera and swore at him.

There are seven campgrounds or holiday parks listed for the area on the Queenstown NZ website.
