Queenstown strangers come together for Christmas picnic

Christmas is a time most people spend with their families, but there are always people who can't do that, and one Queenstown man took upon himself to arrange something for them yesterday.

He put an open invitation out on Facebook for a gathering on the town's lakefront.

He was shocked when more than 1000 people turned up to share the festive spirit.

Some were locals, but most were tourists away from home and their loved ones on the biggest family holiday of the year.

It was a BYO picnic affair – you supply your own drinks and food, and the festivities will follow.

Police kept a watchful eye on the growing crowd, and those making the most of their first Kiwi Christmas.

And as the day drew to an end, the lakeside party continued long in to the night, along with the laughter and new friendships made.
