A rabbit in Auckland has died after apparently consuming marijuana.

In a Facebook post by SPCA Auckland it says they were tipped off about a supposedly sick animal.

"Recently, an anonymous call tipped us off to a 'sick' rabbit."

"Upon arriving at the property one of our drivers found a bunny left in a cage in a critical condition."

The post also said when the rabbit arrived at the SPCA hospital it smelt of marijuana.

"Back at the hospital, the residue and smell of marijuana on the rabbit's fur and his lack of responsiveness quickly led the SPCA Auckland team to conclude that he had been forced to inhale the drug".

Unfortunately for the rabbit he had lost considerable brain function from the ordeal and while he was able to be stabilised for a few days the drug exposure was something the bunny couldn't bounce back from.

"It appears some people derive amusement from forcing animals to consume alcohol and drugs.

"This is always detrimental to the animal's health and as this case demonstrates it can prove fatal."

The SPCA went on to say animals should not be fed illicit substances and their diets should be specific to avoid any unnecessary harm to the animal.

"We hope this tragic case serves as a lesson to all."
