The recovery operation for a missing 18-year-old boatie continues this morning, five days after his boat flipped off the coast of Taranaki.

The teenager was with a 26-year-old man on a small boat at Paritutu near New Plymouth checking cray pots when their boat capsized.

Neither were wearing lifejackets, but the older man managed to swim around 500m back to shore to raise the alarm around 9:20am on Monday.

On Wednesday, police announced that their search would be changing from a rescue to a recovery mission.

Around 35 people are part of the search party, including land search and rescue volunteers from Whanganui and Taranaki, as well as police.

The search is focused around the coastlines and water areas close to the shore.
