As many as 50 rental vehicles have been abandoned by tourists' who have fled the quake stricken area of Kaikoura.

Tourism Holdings Limited CEO Grant Webster says his company has been in touch with their customers since the quake.

"We've been in touch with as many [customers] as we can," he says.

"We've got a driver on the gorun who's been going around talking to our customers."

As many as 130 Chinese tourists were airlifted out of Kaikoura on Tuesday after the Chinese government paid for charter helicopters to rescue their citizens.

Many of the tourists slept in their rentals cars overnight before abandoning them before being flown to safety.

Despite the large number of vehicles abandoned by tourists, Mr Webster says their first priority was for their customers.

"First thing, absolutely, you think about is people, whether that be family, our crew and obviously our customers," he says.

"Thankfully it was the right time of day, there was nobody on the road."

Recovering the vehicles may take some times as many roads in and out of Kaikoura are closed due to slips and cracking.

The rental company says the will work with New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) around a timeline for roads to be open.

"In terms of recovering the vehicles, we don't think it will be a substantial cost at all," says Mr Webster.

"It's about 2 percent of our fleet affected so it's not a substantial number [of cars left behind]."

Mr Webster says they'll work with customers on getting them replacement cars, support and assistance getting back on their feet.

"Every customer probably has a slightly different plan about exactly what they want to do," he says.

"We've been really open about those different plans.

"We've got a number of options ready for customers and we'll work with each of them when they arrive back in Christchurch."

Tourism Holding Limited owns and manages rental providers such as Maui motorhomes, Britz motorhomes and Kiwi experience coach network.
