A man from Auckland University has got into trouble on Mt Taranaki today.
He activated his personal locator beacon just before 10am and a rescue helicopter has been despatched from Palmerston North.
The man began his ascent of the country’s most-climbed mountain on Tuesday.
The Rescue Coordination Centre says it's not clear what altitude he is at because the terrain is giving fluctuating readings.
Metservice told 3 News that temperatures would be close to freezing at 1000 metres above sea level. These conditions are not expected to affect the rescue effort.
There was a risk of snow flurries overnight as the southerly moved up the country, though that is passing now.
