Kiwis find out tomorrow the four designs for the referendum on changing the New Zealand flag.

But 3 News can reveal at least one person who favours a new look – All Black captain Richie McCaw.

McCaw has run out for 142 Test matches with the silver fern on his chest. Now he wants to put the silver fern on New Zealand's flag.

"I think it's great that there is a debate about it. The All Blacks – the silver fern is what it means to be a Kiwi," he says.

"Wearing the black jersey, I'm obviously biased in that regard. So if something like that was a change, I'd be more than happy with that."

Changing the flag is Prime Minister John Key's mission, a political job that just got some powerful rugby help.

A shortlist of four alternative flags will be released tomorrow, and 11 of the options have the silver fern.

All Black great Conrad Smith backs McCaw.

"I'm in favour of changing the flag and I would like to see a silver fern involved," he says.

"I virtually never see a New Zealand flag in the crowd or even around the games, so yeah, it doesn't connect with me personally."

The classic All Black silver fern flag must be a contender for the shortlist, and so too designs that incorporate both the fern and the Southern Cross.

Tomorrow the four-flag shortlist is revealed. In November/December there is the first referendum to choose a preferred alternative, and in March the second vote to choose between the alternative and current flag.

Like the public, the All Blacks are divided. Liam Messam says he's a fan of the old flag.

"It's a bit of a waste of money to change it. The people to ask are the people that fought for our country."
