Rotorua pit bull euthanised after killing neighbouring dog

A family dog's been mauled to death in Rotorua after an American pit bull jumped a fence into its owner's yard.

Rotorua Lakes Council's Animal Control boss Kevin Cootes says the small Australian silky terrier was dead when animal control officers arrived.

"When my staff attended, the owner of the pit bull -- to her credit -- immediately signed the dog over to council for destruction. The dog was immediately taken and put down."

Mr Cootes says pit bulls are a dangerous breed.

"[Pit bull] attacks on people and… attacks on other animals, are very very highly represented in comparison to their numbers of the population. They are a problem and we're treating that breed as a problem in Rotorua."
