The crater lake at Mt Ruapehu is heating up, according to those tasked with keeping an eye on it.

GeoNet Science (GNS) says the crater lake temperature has risen from 25 to 40 degrees over the last few weeks, but they admit to being "uncertain" of the implications.

There has been a swarm of volcanic earthquakes in the area within the last few days which is unusual, as Mt Ruapehu is "usually dominated by volcanic tremor".

While the activity has been noted, Mt Ruapehu remains at Volcanic Alert Level 1, which indicates minor volcanic unrest.

GNS Science says the temperature rise in the crater lake is not at all linked to the eruption at White Island on Wednesday, and will "closely monitor" further activity.
