Rugby World Cup organisers are looking to impose no-fly zones over venues in an effort to stop ambush marketing.
Enforcement officers are being sent by the Ministry of Economic Development to stop companies who are not sponsors from associating themselves with the RWC tournament, Radio New Zealand reported. Rugby World Cup Ltd says it is employing the tactics to protect sponsors’ rights.
Local councils will also be asked to impose no-fly zones over venues during games in places like Auckland.
RWC general manager Ross Young told Radio New Zealand the measures will require more staff.
“The bigger the impact, the bigger the game, the bigger the venue, the more chance of that sort of attack.”
Ticket scalpers and unauthorised companies flying banners over venues are of most serious concern, Mr Young says.
The RWC begins on September 9 at Auckland’s Eden Park stadium.
