Savea bailed over domestic violence

All Blacks winger Julian Savea has appeared in the Wellington District Court this morning over a domestic violence incident involving his partner a week ago.

The 22-year-old Hurricanes and All Blacks winger did not enter a plea and was remanded on bail until his next appearance on May 15.

As part of his bail conditions, Savea is banned from having contact with the complainant.

He has been charged with common assault and police told 3 News his partner needed no medical treatment and didn't go to hospital.

Savea appeared on posters for last year's 'It's not ok' anti-domestic violence campaign.

At a media conference on Sunday, Savea said he was taking steps to ensure a similar incident doesn't happen again.

"I know what I did was wrong, and I'm taking steps to make sure this will never happen again."

After Zac Guildford's widely publicised problems and Savea's assault charge, the New Zealand Rugby Union is organising an independent assessment of the support provided to younger players.
