Search beacon activation in Mt Cook possibly accidental

A search beacon was activated in the Mt Cook National Park last night.

The Rescue Coordination Centre (RCC) was notified of a beacon which pinged once, hired by a party of three, not believed to be overseas tourists.

The party went into the park on Wednesday for a three to four day trip and aren't due out till Saturday or Sunday.

The RCC says there is currently no indication the group is in any difficulty and beacons can be accidentally activated and quickly turned off, which it suspects is what may have happened.

The Mt Cook Search and Rescue team searched the park yesterday but didn't find the party and will continue to search today by helicopter. They're intending to do a trip across Ball Pass.

The forecast is due to change in the area with a southerly coming in later today or tomorrow.
