A security breach at Auckland Airport has resulted in passengers being rescreened and the delay of up to three planes.

All those who made it through the gates were moved back into the terminal so passengers could go through security checks again.

The breach came after a man running late for his flight to Wellington made his way back through the sharkteeth and into the pier, triggering an alarm.

The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) says it is standard procedure that passengers are rescreened when such a breach occurs.

The breach saw Koru Lounge passengers returned airside and one Jetstar plane emptied.

A CAA spokesperson said it "is frustrating that one passenger's thoughtlessness" caused such a large disruption.

Auckland Airport has apologised for the inconvenience caused by the breach.

Security checks have now resumed, though delays are expected. Passengers have been urged to refer to the airport's website for flight information.

The CAA says only departing passengers are screened, so the breach should should have no impact on arrivals.
