A crash which has blocked State Highway 2, west of Opotiki, has left an adult trapped with serious injuries and five children with moderate injuries.
Emergency services are at the scene and police say the incident is a collision between three cars.
Police originally said the crash involved two cars.
Nine people in total were involved, but four are uninjured.
A rescue helicopter has been sent to take the seriously injured victim to hospital.
Motorists near the crash scene are being told to be patient as there will be delays. Traffic is being diverted from SH2 onto Paerata Ridge, Old Creamery Rd, Hukataia Rd, Woodlands Rd and then back onto the highway.
Police say the serious crash unit is investigating.
