A police operation targeting firearms and burglary offences in Manawatu on Tuesday morning has resulted in seven people being arrested - with more expected.

Police had search warrants for 11 properties in the region, and recovered six pistols, a sawn-off .22 rifle and ammunition, as well as stolen property.

Police dogs were used to search the homes, which resulted in charges being handed out for unlawful possession of firearms, receiving stolen property, cultivating cannabis and theft.

Police say more arrests are the likely to be made in the next few days - and Detective Sergeant Karen Heald says the operation has been a success.

"It is pleasing to be able to recover any firearm that is in the wrong hands, so to recover seven during these warrants is an outstanding result," she said.

"These results are a direct result of information from the public and reporting of suspicious behaviour."

Det Sgt Heald said the public keeping them informed will result in more people being brought to justice in the future.

"We want this to continue, so people are encouraged to report anything they see and hear which doesn't seem right," she said.
