Severe quake hits South Island

A 5.7 magnitude earthquake has hit the South Island near Culverden on Tuesday evening.

The quake struck 15km southeast of Culverden at 6.13pm, and was 7km deep. Over 4000 people have recorded feeling the quake on GeoNet, ranging from Auckland to Invercargill.

The quake was part of a string of quake aftershocks, which ranged from a magnitude 4 upwards.

The Fire Service said it had not received any reports of damage.
